Hector Cave House, Oia – A Historic Santorini Stay with Caldera Views

Hector Cave House is one of those places that feels instantly connected to its surroundings. Built directly into the volcanic cliffs of Oia, the property has a history of more than 250 years and was originally used as a traditional wine cellar, known locally as a “canava”. Over time, it became a family summer home before opening its doors to travellers from around the world.

Today, Hector Cave House is part of a small family-owned complex of three unique cave-style properties: The Hector Cave House, The Hector Luxury Cave and The Hector Caldera Nest. Positioned one above the other on the caldera cliff, each has its own character while sharing the same remarkable setting in one of Santorini’s most sought-after villages.

The Hector Cave House itself offers around 60 square metres of indoor space and can host two to five guests. It is especially well suited for a couple, a small group of friends or travellers who want a more intimate alternative to a hotel stay. Inside, the house keeps the charm of traditional cave architecture, with soft curves, built-in sleeping areas and a calm, sheltered atmosphere that feels naturally cool and relaxing.

The bedroom includes a built-in king-size bed located on the loft, along with a single sofa bed. In the living area, two additional built-in single sofa beds provide extra sleeping space. With two bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, the house is also practical for longer self-catering stays. Guests have access to essentials such as a refrigerator, microwave, electric hot plates, toaster, kettle and espresso machine.

The outdoor area is where Hector Cave House truly becomes special. The private veranda offers a peaceful place to relax, dine or sunbathe while looking out over some of Santorini’s most famous views: the caldera, the volcano and Thirassia Island. There is also a private non-heated plunge pool for two, available from April 1 to November 30, adding another layer of comfort to the experience.

Despite its dramatic cliffside location, access is relatively simple for Oia. Guests need to walk up 10 steps from the main village path to reach the house. The closest parking or taxi drop-off point is the Post Office parking lot next to the community hall of Oia, around five minutes away on foot. Transfer service is also available on request.

Hector Cave House is not a standard luxury villa, and that is exactly its charm. It is historic, intimate and full of Santorini character. The property is not wheelchair accessible, pets and children should be discussed in advance, and the accommodation is self-catering. For travellers who value atmosphere, location and authenticity over a conventional hotel setup, Hector Cave House offers a memorable way to experience Oia from inside the caldera itself.
